Like we talked about, your hair type is determined by your genes, the same way your blood type and skin type are determined. But let’s get on thing straight. Your race or ethnicity don’t always mean you will have a specific hair type. Remember, your genes determine that! And while most of us have many similarities to our parents, that doesn’t always mean we will get one or the other’s hair type. There are many people in your family tree that contribute to your genetic make up and they all pass down genes to you. All of these genes combined that are passed down have a part in determining not only your skin and eye color, but also the color and type of hair you end up with. The Hair Chart
I would like to introduce to you: The Hair Chart. This chart helps you to determine your hair type if you have any questions in that area. The chart goes from Type 1 to Type 4. And for each type there is a subtype. Knowing your subtype will allow you to get a little more specific in determining what products and tools are right for your hair. Once you know your type and subtype you will know how to better care for your hair.
I personally have type 2B hair, which isn’t the most difficult hair type, but it does get pretty frizzy at times. People that have more kinky curly hair like type 4C; however, often use chemical treatments to tame the mane. These types of treatments will make you lose your natural hair texture. But it can take years to get your natural hair back, sometimes years even. Chemically processed hair can become brittle, and extremely frizzy with a slow growth rate. Once you get your natural hair back though, these natural hair care products will be a real life saver!

Hair Type 1 – A, B and C
Type 1 hair type is generally straight. But straight hair also comes with texture. Hence the various hair types for category 1.
- A1 hair type is extremely straight with no curl, bounce or wave. It is usually hard to add texture to it. Most people with this hair type turn to chemical treatments such as perms to add a little bounce from time to time.
- 1B hair type is still straight but with a little wave to it. Just enough wave though to have a bit of bounce and the most subtle of curves in the wave. No need for chemical enhancements as this hair type is quite a bit easier to curl.
- 1C hair type is a combination of straight with a little curl. Weather and humidity can affect this hair type, but not always.
Type 2 Hair: A, B and C – Natural Hair Care Tools
Type 2 hair generally has a wavey texture. This is my hair type. The wave may vary however. This is why we have the scale to help you determine which hair type you have. Mine tends to lean more toward type 2B. Which one do you have?
- 2A hair type has mostly loose waves, and the hair is usually straight at the crown. The waves slowly form down toward the middle, but are very fine and thin with little texture to them.
- 2B hair type is also usually straight at the crown with the wave generally starting midway. The difference is, these waves are more defined. They form an S shape as they descend down to the ends. This wave type is a bit more coarse in texture and has a tendency to frizz.
- 2C hair type waves from the crown all the way to the tip. The shape of the wave is usually more like a ringlet or tight curl. The texture can be pretty coarse and the hair can be very thick making this hair type extremely prone to frizzing.
Hair Type 3 – A, B, and C
This hair type 3 is the most popular for hair. We all want those big, fat, bouncy curls. Type 3 hair types have that smooth, shiny and voluminous hair. It just seems to say, ” My hair is healthy and beautiful”. So that is we strive for. However, unfortunately, we don’t always have this. As I said before, it is all about your gene pool.
Hair type 3 is maybe one of the most popular types of hair. Everyone wants to have those big, bouncy, perfect curls. This hair type has smooth, shiny, voluminous hair that just seems to scream, “My hair is beautiful and healthy and well maintained”. Type 3 hair is the hair we all strive for. It is the hair we all wish we had. Unfortunately, we can’t all get what we want now can we. Like we said before, your hair is determined by your genes and which ones are passed down to you.
- 3A hair type has big, loose spiral curls. They tend to be shiny and super springy with a soft texture and a beautiful well-defined S-shape.
- 3B type curls are quite a bit tighter. The curls range from ringlets to corkscrews. This hair type experiences more volume and density and leans more toward the coarse side.
- 3C type curls are the kinky, coily type curls. They tend to be extremely tight corkscrew shaped. Because the curl is so tight, the hair will appear to have shrinkage and will appear more dense with greater volume.
Type 4 Hair – Natural Hair Care Products
This is the most common type of hair for people with an ethnic background. They tend to use chemical enhancement to manage and tame their curly, frizzy hair. But, with this exciting new product, you may never have to do that again. For now though, let’s take a look at type 4 hair.
- 4A hair type has an extremely tight curl with a distinct S shape. This type of hair is dense with springy coils in variations from fine to wiry and is usually very thick and course.
- 4B type hair is extremely unique. It’s curls look more like a Z-shaped pattern with angles and sharp edges. The curls is less defined in shape but is much tighter. This curl also has variations from fine to wiry and thin to course.
- 4C type hair is very thick, dense, and extremely course with little to no definition in the curl itself. This hair type can range from super fine to wiry and very course. The curls are delicate and can be lost easily and has a tendency to frizz very badly.
